Hands on Activities
First, we will read and become familiar with the documents PDE requires of my Act 48 Professional Ethics classes:
- Model Code of Ethics for Educators;
- PA Code of Professional Practice & Conduct for Educators;
- differences between a code of ethics and code of conduct;
- Educator Discipline Act; and
- PA Professional Standards & Practices Commission's history, membership and role in adjudicating Educator Misconduct Complaints filed by Office of Chief Counsel.
Second, you will use what you've learned from these documents to:
- discuss common code of conduct issues for PA Educators within a case study format with fellow School and System Leaders from Pennsylvania;
Third, you will:
- facilitate discussions with educators from your LEA involving the same common code of conduct issues in the same case studies; and
Finally, you will:
- work with at least two of these educators as they present a lesson to one of their classes focused on a provision of their Student Code of Conduct.
Learning Objectives
Specifically SSLs will learn to:
- Participate in and facilitate peer discussion of PDE's components of Professional Ethics and case studies based upon common ethical dilemmas.
- form a small (3-5 persons) Ethics Professional Learning Community (PLC) with educators of their choice from his/her Local Education Agency (LEA).
- take Pre and Post Assessments to show improvement that are submitted to PDE as part of Culminating Project.
- administer Pre and Post Assessments from PLC members
- work with at least two educators in your PLC to develop and present one ethics lesson to one of their classes based upon your LEA's student code of conduct. Pre and Post Assessments are taken to gather student achievement data.
SSL Reviews and Reflective Writings
To read reviews from SSLs who have taken our course, click on Act 45 Reviews in the top menu bar.
If you would like to read some of their Reflective Writings, I've also included them on the Act 45 Review page. PDE requires SSLs to write each class session. Their topics are tied to the SSL Corollary Standards and what we covered in that session. Please read the topic and then the SSL responses. We feel the responses have been excellent!
